Cut elimination for a logic with induction and co-induction

چکیده
Proof search has been used to specify a wide range of computation systems. In order to build a framework for reasoning about such specifications, we make use of a sequent calculus involving induction and co-induction. These proof principles are based on a proof theoretic (rather than set-theoretic) notion of definition [19, 11, 47, 25]. Definitions are akin to logic programs, where the left and right rules for defined atoms allow one to view theories as “closed” or defining fixed points. The use of definitions and free equality makes it possible to reason intentionally about syntax. We add in a consistent way rules for pre and post fixed points, thus allowing the user to reason inductively and co-inductively about properties of computational system making full use of higher-order abstract syntax. Consistency is guaranteed via cut-elimination, where we give the first, to our knowledge, cut-elimination procedure in the presence of general inductive and co-inductive definitions.

Cut-elimination for a logic with definitions and induction
In order to reason about specifications of computations that are given via the proof search or logic programming paradigm one needs to have at least some forms of induction and some principle for reasoning about the ways in which terms are built and the ways in which computations can progress. The literature contains many approaches to formally adding these reasoning principles with logic speci...
متن کاملValentini's cut-elimination for provability logic resolved
In 1983, Valentini presented a syntactic proof of cut-elimination for a sequent calculus GLSV for the provability logic GL where we have added the subscript v for “Valentini”. The sequents in GLSV were built from sets, as opposed to multisets, thus avoiding an explicit contraction rule. From a syntactic point of view, it is more satisfying and formal to explicitly identify the applications of t...
متن کاملFuzzy Logic Based Life Estimation of PWM Driven Induction Motors
Pulse-width modulated (PWM) adjustable frequency drives (AFDs) are extensively used in industries for control of induction motors. It has led to significant advantages in terms of the performance, size, and efficiency but the output voltage waveform no longer remains sinusoidal. Hence, overshoots, high rate of rise, harmonics and transients are observed in the voltage wave. They increase voltag...

We apply Mints’ technique for proving the termination of the epsilon substitution method via cut-elimination to the system of Peano Arithmetic with Transfinite Induction given by Arai.
متن کاملCut-Simulation in Impredicative Logics
We investigate cut-elimination and cut-simulation in impredicative (higher-order) logics. We illustrate that adding simple axioms such as Leibniz equations to a calculus for an impredicative logic — in our case a sequent calculus for classical type theory — is like adding cut. The phenomenon equally applies to prominent axioms like Booleanand functional extensionality, induction, choice, and de...
